If your parents have a bookshelf, there’s a very good chance there’s a copy of The Da Vinci Code on that bookshelf. (My parents’ certain does.)

Dan Brown’s 2003 thriller novel about symbologist Robert Langdon and his quest to unravel a mystery tied to Leonardo Da Vinci became a full-fledged pop cultural phenomenon last decade. The book sold tens of millions of copies, and the film adaptation, directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks as Langdon, grossed more than $750 million worldwide. The thing was inescapable. They even made a video game.

Sony next turned a previous Langdon novel, Angels & Demons, into a film, with somewhat less successful results (just $485 million internationally). That could explain the seven year gap between Langdon movies, and the fact that they’re skipping the third novel, The Lost Symbol, and heading straight to the fourth, Inferno, which is basically “The Dante Code,” with Langdon and a new sidekick played by Felicity Jones, trying to save the world. Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Academy Award® winner Ron Howard returns to direct the latest bestseller in Dan Brown’s (Da Vinci Code) billion-dollar Robert Langdon series, Inferno, which finds the famous symbologist (again played by Tom Hanks) on a trail of clues tied to the great Dante himself. When Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones), a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories. Together, they race across Europe and against the clock to foil a deadly global plot.

Frankly, after the muted response to Angels & Demons, I’m kind of surprised they’re making another Langdon movie at all, but I suppose these sorts of franchises must continue until they exhaust themselves or people stop showing up completely. The reason I’m curious about this one is the original Inferno novel’s gonzo bonkers ending (which I will not spoil); I really wonder whether they’re going to adapt it faithfully or not. (I’m guessing not, but we’ll see.) Inferno opens in theaters on October 28.
