Last year, we first heard word a new video game set in the modern Planet of the Apes cinematic timeline would be coming out in conjunction with War for the Planet of the Apes. The movie’s release came and went, and there was nary a whisper about this video game. Today, Andy Serkis’ Imaginarium Studios finally revealed what it had been working on for the past year. Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier will be a cinematic adventure game that delves into the war between humans and apes during the years between Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes.

IGN had the exclusive on the first details, including the above announcement trailer and the very first gameplay footage below. Set apart from the California tribes the movies have focused on, Last Frontier takes place in the Rockies, where an ape encampment is struggling to survive the winter. Likewise, the remaining pockets of civilization in and around the mountain region are finding it harder and harder to make it through the harsh season. The two sides of the conflict will collide as their efforts to survive push back against one another.

Players will take the role of both ape and human in Last Frontier, and the decisions made on either side will impact not just the opposition, but how the remainder of the game plays out through the ~3-hour duration. Like Telltale Games’ recent releases, Last Frontier is all about choice and the weight of those decisions, but there won’t be any puzzles or action sequences to interact with along the way. This game will be more along the lines of an interactive film, blurring the line between cinema and video games by merely offering players a choice in how their version of this story ends.

From what we can glean of the early gameplay footage and some concept art, the human and ape storylines will have some heavy choices to make. You can see how you’ll be able to direct conversations and the plot along, with the heavy focus being on not just doing what’s right for your faction of choice, but to hopefully ensure everyone makes it out of the scenarios alive. The ape conclave and different human encampments will feature prominently, and making this game more about story than action should help it stay in line with the movies its based on.

Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier will be out on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC this fall.
