Although Silver & Black is on hold (for now), Sony has plenty of other plans for the world of Spider-Man, including this fall’s Venom (starring Tom Hardy and his voice) and Morbius (starring Jared Leto as a super-powered vampire), as well as the animated Into the Spider-Verse. Clearly, the studio is keeping their live-action offerings centered on villains and anti-heroes, and they’ve hired a screenwriter to tackle the next addition: Kraven the Hunter.

Sony’s upcoming Venom movie went from sounding like a horrible idea to looking like one of the more interesting superhero spinoff projects in the works. While we’re not terribly excited about Ruben Fleischer directing, the cast for this thing is, how do you say, lit. In addition to Tom Hardy, the Spider-Man-adjacent Venom is set to star Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate (Jenny Slate! Seriously!). And according to a new report, Woody Harrelson might be getting in on this thing too.

Mattel has always had a fairly strong variety of items from its licensing partners at San Diego Comic-Con, but this year the toy company appears to be dialing things back a bit for a more focused show. While the standard Hot Wheels and Mega Construx sets will be available for purchase, it’s the Justice League and DC Super Hero Girls items that are likely going to draw the most attention. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Those properties deserve all the attention they can get.

Spider-Man Hits the Bodega in His Latest Teaser
Spider-Man’s a true New Yorker: he understands when to take the 6 train versus rolling the dice on the 2nd Avenue subway, he knows where to get the Bronx’s best chopped cheese, and when he needs a snack in a pinch, he hits up his friendly neighborhood bodega. In the latest promotional spot for the umpteenth reboot Spider-Man: Homecoming, the web-head is late to a big NBA Finals watching party at Tony Stark’s place. (The commercial was written to air specifically during the basketball playoffs this year.) But when he ducks into a nearby bodega — for those uninitiated, it’s really just a corner convenience store, but immeasurably better in every way — he has a chance encounter.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards have always been kind to our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. In 2003, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man took home awards for Kirsten Dunst and Best Kiss  —  seriously, who can forget that upside down kiss in the rain?  —  as well as nominations for Best Actor, Best Villain, and Best Movie. So with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming on its way into theaters this summer, what better place to premiere a brand new trailer? Odds are MTV’s voters will have Tom Holland on the stage next year for Best Hero in the upcoming film. Man, I wish all award shows had categories this fun.

For a fresh start with Spider-Man, Sony had to give him something distinctive. To set Tom Holland’s take on the webslinger apart from Tobey Maguire’s (and way, way apart from Andrew Garfield’s), the studio sent the hero back to high school and returned him to his teenage roots. Spider-Man: Homecoming aims to be a new take on the comic-book mythos all over, in fact — a new girlfriend in pop star Zendaya, the first onscreen appearance of the villainous Vulture, and with a new teaser unearthed today, we learned that a key piece of latter-day Spidey tech will make it movie debut as well.

In other words, this movie is crowded. Maybe overcrowded. Marvel and Sony’s new Spider-Man (Tom Holland) steals the show with his wisecracks and web-swinging, but serves almost no narrative purpose. Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) is only slightly more important to the story; his main function is to introduce the character to a broader audience before he gets spun off into his own standalone movie in 2018. The subplot involving the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) ties up some loose ends from the last Captain America movie, but it’s not really crucial to the film’s central conflict between Cap (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) over governmental control of the Avengers. (The Winter Soldier barely appears in the original Civil War comics.)

Tom Holland has officially taken up the Spider-Man mantle for Marvel and Sony, but he’ll never replace Tobey Maguire in the deepest, web-covered corners of our hearts. Following his debut in Captain America: Civil War, the consensus among fans and critics alike is that Holland makes for a fantastic Spidey. You might even say he’s an…amazing…Spider-Man. And it looks like he has one very awesome fan in particular who knows a thing or two about web-slinging.

Not long after the initial rumor was reported, it was confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. will be making an appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming — returning Sony’s favor following Tom Holland’s MCU debut as the web-slinger in Captain America: Civil War. Since then, we’ve been wondering if any other Marvel characters would crossover to the Spidey reboot, and according to Holland, there’s at least one more hero he wants to see in his upcoming solo film.
