Gill took the title of the album from a term that was once used in a derogatory fashion to disparage Oklahomans who were forced to migrate from Gill's home state to the West Coast during the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. Gill is re-defining the term on the new album, which, according to a press release, "embraces his roots and explores some of the most important issues of our time."

“I thought this was going to be a songwriter record, not a concept album,” Gill states. “It wound up being more information than I’d envisioned. A friend sent me an email saying, ‘You could have only written this record after living a 60-year-plus life.’ He said, ‘There’s no struggle in these songs, just truth and your experience.'"

Gill has previewed one of the tracks from the new album, "A Letter to My Mama," which is available via an array of digital music retailers.

Gill has won 21 Grammy Awards in a career that has seen him become one of the most respected artists and musicians in the history of country music. Best known for a string of classic songs that includes "Go Rest High on That Mountain," "When I Call Your Name," "Tryin' to Get Over You," "I Still Believe in You," "Look at Us" and more, in recent years the 62-year-old singer-songwriter and guitarist has shifted his focus to less commercial, more individualistic projects including 2011's Guitar Slinger, Bakersfield in 2013 and 2016's Down to My Last Bad Habit.

Gill joined the Eagles for a worldwide tour in 2017, and he continues to play with the legendary group. An upcoming European run of dates includes concerts in Antwerp, Belgium; Cologne, Germany; and Amsterdam.

Okie is set for release on Aug. 23. It is currently available for pre-order.
