Usually during summertime, television producers give us lite, fluffy shows to enjoy but last night I watched something that wasn’t that at all, it had meat to it, so to speak. The HBO movie Hemingway & Gellhorn.

This movie stars Nicole Kidman (Martha Gellhorn) and Clive Owen (Ernest Hemingway) and follows their romance, war travels and many of their writing adventures. Gellhorn is a war correspondent and Hemingway a literary genius. There are also other well known actors such as Robert Duvall, Tony Shalhoub, Parker Posey, Peter Coyote, Lars Ulrich (of Metallica Fame) and David Strathairn.

Honestly I had never heard of Gellhorn but she was apparently an incredibly fearless woman who was one of the first females to report from the war front. Hemingway, as you know, wrote some our most loved classics like ‘The Old Man and the Sea’, ‘A Farewell to Arms’ and ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’.

The show is currently running on HBO and is a ‘must see’ in my opinion. It, to me, shows the push and pull of personal relationships that parallels the same with war situations. Someone always has to win, at all costs. It’s just a matter of how far you’re willing to take it.
